Michael Moore: Liberal, Awards, Documentary Films, Academy Award Winner And Michael Moore Books

Michael Moore has captivated liberals and conservatives alike for nearly 20 years. His upfront tactics and grisly discoveries are portrayed to viewers through his award-winning documentary films. Starting with "Roger and Me" and leading to his most recent work, "Sicko," he has revealed the truth behind many Americans' misconceptions. Whether one loves or hates him, Michael Moore catches the nations attention every time one of his documentary films is released and is a force to be reckoned with.

In 1989, his first documentary, "Roger and Me," was released. This film takes place in Moore's hometown, Flint, Michigan, also the home of General Motors. He tries to figure out why GM would want to cause such destruction with downsizing and consequently turn Flint into a "ghost town." Throughout the film, Michael Moore attempts to get an interview with GM's chairman, Roger Smith, to confront him with the matter. He won many of his first awards for this film, including Most Popular Film at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Michael Moore continued his interviewing and research with his next major documentary in 2002, "Bowling for Columbine." This film deals with a highly sensitive matter, starting with the school shooting in Columbine and chronicling America's fondness for gun violence. "Bowling for Columbine" received rave reviews and even made Michael Moore an Academy Award winner for Best Documentary at the 2003 Oscars.

Never one to avoid controversy, Michael Moore's next project in 2004 focused on the events following the 9/11 attacks. "Fahrenheit 9/11" makes an argument regarding the Bush administrations usage of the events to push unjust wars upon Iraq and Afghanistan. This film garnered Moore the top prize at Cannes Film Festival. He is currently working on a follow up film, "Fahrenheit 9/11 1/2."

His most recent release, "Sicko," documents the United States highly profitable health care system and relates horror stories of people who have been wronged by the system. Released in the summer of 2007, it has not been up for any awards but it sure to attract a few nominations. Michael Moore's liberal stance has attracted many followers and angered many of their opponents. The important thing is that he addresses important issues and calls attention to them.

Along with his award-winning documentary films, Michael Moore is an author. He has many books regarding some the same issues he addresses on camera, as well as his thoughts on government and war. "The Official Fahrenheit 9/11 Reader" includes the entire movie transcript including supplemental material. Of all his books, the most recent is a compilation of letters Michael Moore has received from G.I.s in Iraq and Afghanistan titled, "Will They Ever Trust Us Again?" Michael Moore has not only become an Academy Award Winner for his documentaries, but a #1 best-selling author thanks to his informative books.

From a boy growing up in Flint, Michigan, to an Academy Award winner, Michael Moore has educated and inspired many with his liberal take on America's corporations and systems. Not everyone may agree with his point of view; however he brings attention to issues that should be of concern to the nation. As an author and as a film-maker, Michael Moore has gone above and beyond his call of duty.
