Is the sport of bowling to blame for school shootings? Probably not, but Michael Moore uses the idea for the title of his Academy Award winning documentary “Bowling for Columbine.” First met with rave reviews, critics have argued many points in “Bowling for Columbine,” including its categorization as a documentary.

The “Bowling for Columbine” title stems from the idea that on the day of the Columbine school shootings just outside Littleton, Colorado; the future shooters were attending a school bowling class. Whether or not they attended that day is still questioned, but a little over five hours after the bowling, began the horror began. Twelve students, one teacher, and the two shooters died on April 20, 1999. Twenty-four more were injured, leaving a nation questioning how this happened. Michael Moore answered, lobbying for gun control and other causes.

Someone is to blame. Michael Moore shows the audience many perceived culprits. A bank that gives out guns with a new account, Kmart who sold the bullets used in the school shooting, and even the United States government are to blame. The government in the United States is nothing like that of Canada's. Moore spends time in Canada, freely entering unlocked houses and interviewing residents about their safety. He then asks why a similar trial in the United States results in locked doors and security systems.

Among the cultural icons under attack is Charlton Heston, the head of the National Rifle Association. In “Bowling for Columbine,” Heston is shown, after a shooting sequence, giving a speech to the National Rifle Association while clutching a rifle and saying "from my cold, dead hands.” The average viewer assumes he is speaking after the Columbine shootings, defending the right to bear arms. In fact, that clip is from over a year after the shootings and in response to being given a gift. The advertisement for Willie Horton was also edited. Two commercials were cut and woven together to create a deceptive message. Though it was removed from the VHS release, it is still misrepresented and shown on the DVD versions of “Bowling for Columbine.”

While “Bowling for Columbine” is interesting and informative, it is important to remember that when all is seen and heard, “Bowling for Columbine” is not above speculation. A movie made to inform the public of government deceptions, deceives the very audience it claims to inform. Many facts can be challenged. While “Bowling for Columbine” provides many truthful ideas and strong stories, it is also a product meant to receive revenue for its maker. David Hardy is one of many critics who have pinpointed more than 10 perceived facts with a separate truth. His website is one of many that gives detailed responses to false allegations and confusing portrayals in “Bowling for Columbine.” He alleges that because “Bowling for Columbine” is not an honest portrayal, it does not meet the non-fiction stipulation for documentary status.

“Bowling for Columbine” is a heavily criticized Michael Moore film centering on the media influence and gun control beliefs held by United States citizens. The film can be informative and worth seeing, as long as an open mind is kept and facts are researched before being easily accepted. Being an Academy Award winner, “Bowling for Columbine” should be readily available at most major retailers and video rental stores.
